Community Viewpoint: Tolerance Among the Children of Abraham

We are living in a time where faith in God is becoming ever more challenging. Faith communities in general and Muslims in particular, are under ever-increasing pressure. It is because of the intolerance, hatred and disrespect among those who belong to the Abrahamic family, i.e. Muslims, Christians and Jews. When Pastor Terry Jones, of Florida, who is supposed to be the model for his followers and a preacher of the Gospel, burned the Holy Quran, it was out of hatred and disrespect toward all Muslims. He exercised his freedom of speech, but freedom has never been free, and some people have paid the ultimate price for it with their lives. Just because you can do something doesn’t mean that you should. As a tit for tat, an ignorant man on the other side of the world in Afghanistan stormed a United Nations compound and killed innocent people for no reason whatsoever. These attacks were carried out in the most brutal manner and with little regard for human life.

The violence must stop

This violence must stop. It is cruel, inhumane and unjust and is totally against the principles and teachings of Islam. Why all of these fanatics and bigots, hatred and intolerance?

I am not going to talk about others; I would like to justify the religion of Islam, which is being stereotyped by the media. One should remember to go to the source of Islam and separate what the true religion of Islam says from what is portrayed in the media.

We all need to differentiate between the religion of Islam, which symbolizes peace, brotherhood, security, integration and moderation, and the radical Muslims, who want to impose their doctrines upon others through armed struggle. It is as a result of this effort that terrorism comes into being.

No religion has the monopoly on good people. Jews, Christians and Muslims have their disturbed radicals, those who make life miserable for others and who use their sacred books to justify their evil deeds. It is a sociological and human phenomenon and has nothing to do with any religion. If there is conservatism in religion, it begets extremism and radicalism which later cannot be controlled.

Some Muslim extremists try to use the Holy Quran to justify bombing innocent people on trains and planes. But the vast majority of Muslims, supported by the correct understanding of the Quran and sunnah, reject the interpretation of the militants and are sickened by their actions.

There is no place for extremism, fundamentalism or obscurantism in Islam, and those who happen to be extremists are, in fact, unaware of the real spirit of Islam which is based on security, safety, and peace. These principles permeate the lives of Muslims.

The bigot and the zealot are deluded, believing they are doing a service to Islam by harming others, when, in fact, they do the work of Satan. Islam not only condemns the extreme approach but also ordains us to root it out.

The death of Osama bin Ladin will not stop the radical Muslims. Ten others will replace him.

We need good, moderate Islamic scholars and preachers to teach the real spirit of Islam.

If you look to our prophetic role model, you will see that he not only treated followers of the earlier scriptures, the people of the Book, with the utmost respect, but he also urged his followers to do the same.

The Prophet Muhammad — peace be upon him — guaranteed the protection of other religions under Muslim rule. In a well-known saying, he said that anyone who kills a dhimmi (a non-Muslim living in a Muslim land) would not even smell the fragrance of paradise.

The Prophet of Islam inaugurated a constitution and gave it to mankind. He founded a nation-state. Whatever rights he gave to Muslims were also given to the non-Muslims. He gave constitutional protection to the local customs and tribal traditions of the Jews. Their traditions, values and culture were protected through constitutional guarantee. He gave the idea of economic support and founded it on the Brotherhood of Madina. He gave them fundamental rights and complete religious freedom and said the Jews would enjoy the same amount of independence as Muslims with regard to their religion. Madina was declared the “hub of peace.” All fundamental rights such as basic necessities, occupation, property, life and honor were granted.

Prophet Muhammad had so much respect for Christians that he once offered a delegation from Najran (a Christian tribe in Arabia) to say their prayers in his mosque.
